Age Right Training Editorial on www.ideafit.com on Stress from Competition

Dear JKeller,

I don't think it's necessary to take the stress out of competition.  Stress should be perceived as a positive force in competition and not a negative force.  What comes from stress that is good?  Motivation, self-esteem, and compassion.  Yes, compassion.  Every time I fail to achieve, I am humbled and remember this feeling when someone else fails.

When stress causes negative feelings in oneself and others, the body lets us know.  This is the time to change our behaviors and remember what kind of stress we need.  For example, when my neck starts to hurt, I stop and do some tiny exercise, quiet my mind, and go out with a friend.  We might think of ourselves as a pendulum, being mindful that the goal is not perfect balance at all times, but a slower swing back and forth.
